The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has reiterated its strong support for Ghana’s initiative to establish a robust Competition and Consumer Protection framework.

An eleven-member delegation from the ECOWAS Regional Competition Authority (ERCA), led by Executive Director Dr. Simeon Konan Koffi, met with Ghana’s Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, on September 9, 2025, in Accra. The meeting focused on fostering collaboration and regional cooperation to promote fair market practices across West Africa.

The visit highlights ECOWAS’ commitment to strengthening regulatory frameworks that enhance economic efficiency, protect consumer rights, and promote inclusive growth. This initiative aligns with the broader ECOWAS Vision 2050, which seeks an integrated and competitive regional market.

Dr. Koffi emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts among member states to create a conducive environment for businesses while safeguarding consumer welfare. Minister Ofosu-Adjare welcomed the support, noting that the new law would be instrumental in addressing market distortions and unfair trade practices in Ghana.

As the region pushes toward deeper economic integration, Ghana’s partnership with ECOWAS in crafting and implementing this legislation is expected to serve as a benchmark for other member countries aiming to bolster competition and consumer protections.

This collaboration marks a significant step in advancing fair competition and consumer rights, ultimately contributing to sustainable economic development within the West African region.
