In an atmosphere of a renewed effort to deepen the long-standing partnership between the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and Germany, the President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, on Tuesday 4th November 2025 hosted a high-level delegation from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) at the Commission’s Headquarters in Abuja.

The German delegation, led by Mr. Christoph Rauh, Director for Africa at BMZ, is in Abuja for ongoing high-level negotiations between ECOWAS and the German Government. The talks are part of broader efforts to strengthen cooperation in peace, security, and economic development across the West African region.
In his remarks, Mr. Rauh underscored Germany’s evolving development priorities, noting that while peace and security remain central to its engagement in West Africa, the German Government is increasingly focusing on private sector growth and sustainable economic transformation. This strategic shift, he said, aims to foster investment and drive job creation, aligning with Germany’s goal of enhancing regional integration and economic resilience.
Vice-President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Mrs. Damtien L. Tchintchibidja, provided an update on the progress of the negotiations, highlighting the key frameworks and initiatives under discussion to guide future collaboration between ECOWAS and Germany.
In response, Dr. Touray expressed appreciation for Germany’s consistent and long-standing support to the ECOWAS region. He reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to building a partnership anchored on shared values, mutual respect, and sustainable development outcomes.
“This partnership continues to stand as a model of strategic cooperation — one that adapts to the evolving needs of our region and contributes meaningfully to our collective progress,” Dr. Touray stated.
The visit marks another milestone in the enduring ECOWAS–Germany partnership, signaling a new phase of engagement centered on economic empowerment and private sector-driven growth. With this renewed focus, both parties are charting a course toward a more resilient, integrated, and prosperous West Africa.
