ECOWAS Parliament @25: Celebrating a Legacy of Integration and Influence By Raymond Enoch

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament is commemorating its 25th anniversary, marking a significant milestone in its journey towards fostering regional unity, peace, and democratic governance across West Africa.

Established in 2000, the ECOWAS Parliament has served as a vital platform for dialogue and policy-making, representing the collective aspirations of the West African populace. Over the past quarter-century, it has played a pivotal role in promoting economic integration, advocating for human rights, and addressing regional challenges through collaborative efforts.

The 25th-anniversary celebrations commenced with the First Ordinary Session of 2025, held in Abuja, Nigeria. Parliamentarians from across the ECOWAS region gathered to reflect on the achievements of the past and deliberate on strategies to enhance the effectiveness of the Parliament in the coming years.

Notable dignitaries, including Hon. Hadja Memounatou Ibrahim, Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, and Hon. Innocent Odoh, President of the Association of West African Legislative Correspondents (AWALCO), emphasized the importance of continued collaboration and commitment to the ideals of regional integration. They underscored the need for inclusive policies that address the diverse needs of the West African people.

The 25th-anniversary celebrations also featured a parliamentary seminar themed “ECOWAS at 50, Parliament at 25: Reflections of the Community Parliament Toward Attaining Regional Integration Achievements.” The seminar provided a platform for stakeholders to assess the progress made in regional integration and discuss strategies to overcome existing challenges. Participants emphasized the need for strengthened institutions, enhanced economic cooperation, and a renewed focus on sustainable development.

As the ECOWAS Parliament celebrates this significant milestone, it remains steadfast in its mission to be the voice of the people, advocating for policies that promote peace, prosperity, and unity in West Africa. The journey of the past 25 years serves as a testament to the collective will and determination of the region’s people to build a better future through collaboration and shared values.
