ECOWAS Calls for Restraint, Respect for Venezuela’s Sovereignty By Raymond Enoch
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has expressed concern over recent developments in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, underscoring the need for strict adherence to international law and diplomatic norms in addressing the situation.
In a statement issued in Abuja, the ECOWAS Commission acknowledged the right of states to combat international crimes, including terrorism and drug trafficking, but emphasized that such efforts must be conducted in full respect of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states.
The Commission recalled the obligations of the international community under international law, particularly Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter, which enshrines the principles of non-use of force and respect for territorial integrity.
ECOWAS further aligned itself with the African Union’s statement of 3 January 2026, which called for restraint and inclusive dialogue among the people of Venezuela as a pathway toward stability and national cohesion.
The regional institution reiterated its solidarity with the Venezuelan people and urged all states to respect the country’s independence and territorial integrity.
Reaffirming its commitment to peaceful and inclusive processes, ECOWAS expressed support for the people of Venezuela as they work collectively to shape the future of their country through dialogue and inclusivity.
