AIG Zone 7, Crime Reporters Unite to Tackle Rising Crime in FCT. By Raymond Enoch

In a major push to bolster security and deepen trust between law enforcement and the press, the leadership of Crime Reporters Global, led by its National Chairman Mr. Tita Onyebuchi, paid a courtesy visit to Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Victor Olaiya, psc(+) at the Zone 7 Police Headquarters in Abuja.

The high-level engagement, which took place on Wednesday, was aimed at fostering a stronger working relationship between the media and security agencies, with a focus on transparency, intelligence-sharing, and enhanced collaboration in the fight against crime within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and the Zone at large.

During the visit, Mr. Onyebuchi commended the Nigeria Police Force for its tireless efforts and resilience in combating crime, even amidst growing challenges. He emphasized the critical need for synergy in intelligence gathering and dissemination, and called for greater investment in community-based policing strategies.

He also expressed concern over the rising involvement of youth in internet fraud and related criminal activities, describing it as a growing threat to national stability. He urged the police and media to unite in raising awareness, sharing real-time information, and educating the public to ensure a more secure and informed society.

In his response, AIG Victor Olaiya warmly welcomed the delegation and reiterated the indispensable role of responsible journalism in modern policing. He described the media as a vital stakeholder in advancing public safety and building community trust.

“Your visit reinforces the bridge between us. The media is not just an observer but a critical partner in our mission to protect lives and maintain order. Through balanced reporting and constructive feedback, journalists contribute significantly to police accountability and effectiveness,” AIG Olaiya said.

The meeting concluded on a note of mutual commitment to sustained engagement and collaboration. Both parties pledged to work closely in pursuit of a safer Federal Capital Territory and a more responsive policing system.

The visit was formally acknowledged by ASP Mohammed Halima, Police Public Relations Officer for the AIG, Zone 7 Headquarters, Abuja.
