In a significant stride towards reshaping Africa’s agricultural landscape, H. E. Moses Vilakati has been appointed as the African Union (AU) Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy, and Sustainable Environment (ARBE). This appointment marks a historic milestone for Eswatini, as Vilakati becomes the first citizen of the Kingdom to hold such a prominent position within the AU.
H.E Vilakati’s extensive experience in agriculture and environmental conservation, coupled with his academic background—including a Master’s in Agriculture (International Development) from California Polytechnic State University—positioned him uniquely to spearhead initiatives aimed at enhancing food security, promoting sustainable development, and fostering economic growth across the continent.
Upon assuming office, Vilakati outlined a comprehensive agenda for his first 100 days, focusing on pivotal priorities:
Food Security and Self-Reliance, Employment creation for Women and youth emphasizing the need for Africa to harness its vast natural resources, including fertile land and abundant water, to achieve self-sufficiency in food production.
Advocating for the transformation of raw agricultural products into finished goods, thereby reducing dependency on food imports and enhancing economic resilience.
Focusing on generating job opportunities, particularly for women and youth, to stimulate economic growth and reduce poverty levels.
In a recent engagement with development partners, Vilakati highlighted the importance of collaboration in achieving these goals. He emphasized that strategic partnerships, including those with international entities like the European Union, are crucial for sharing expertise, resources, and technological advancements necessary for sustainable agricultural development.
