In a decisive move to strengthen Africa’s voice on the global stage, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has convened the second preparatory meeting for the World Radiocommunication Conference 2027 (WRC-27) in Abuja, Nigeria. The three-day session brings together telecommunications experts and regulators from ECOWAS Member States, focused on crafting a harmonized regional strategy ahead of the critical international conference.
Held under the banner of regional integration and technological cooperation, the meeting aims to develop and consolidate ECOWAS’s common preliminary views on WRC-27 agenda items. The ultimate goal: to ensure a unified West African position within the broader African framework, as recognized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
“This preparatory meeting is a testament to our region’s commitment to speaking with one voice on the global platform,” said an ECOWAS official at the opening ceremony. “It’s vital for Africa to present coordinated proposals through each Regional Economic Community, and this is a key step in that direction.”

The gathering highlights the region’s proactive stance on radiocommunication policies, which are increasingly central to global connectivity, spectrum management, and emerging technologies like 5G and satellite communications.
As WRC-27 approaches, ECOWAS’s strategic alignment will play a pivotal role in shaping Africa’s contributions to global telecommunications development, ensuring that the continent’s needs and priorities are both heard and addressed.
