ECOWAS- IWMI Partner to Improve Water Security and Climate Resilience in West Africa

Climate Resilience and security of water has continued to dominate discourse in policy debates. In a decisive step toward bolstering water resilience across West Africa, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), through its Water Resources Management Center (WRMC), has inked a landmark five-year agreement with the International Water Management Institute (IWMI).

The strategic partnership, unveiled in Accra, aims to revolutionize regional water security by co-developing cutting-edge digital tools for flood and drought forecasting, facilitating cross-border data exchange, and strengthening biodiversity and agrifood systems.

Anchored in WRMC’s regional water policy and strategic blueprint, the agreement prioritizes science-based, inclusive governance to tackle escalating challenges—from water scarcity and climate shocks to rural poverty.

“This collaboration underscores our shared commitment to a climate-resilient West Africa,” said WRMC leadership at the signing ceremony.

With digital innovation and policy alignment at its core, the partnership marks a bold stride toward sustainable development and regional stability in the face of mounting environmental threats.
