By Raymond Enoch
In a significant diplomatic stride, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has underscored the nation’s commitment to enhancing its partnership with the European Union (EU). During the 3rd AU-EU Ministerial Meeting in Brussels, Amb. Tuggar engaged in pivotal discussions with EU leaders, focusing on shared priorities such as security, climate change, migration, and the Global Gateway Initiative.
One of the key highlights of these discussions was the proposal for collaborative projects aimed at sustainable development. Amb. Tuggar emphasized the potential of initiatives like the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline, which promises to create jobs across 15 African countries. Additionally, he advocated for partnerships with Nigeria’s 12 River Basin Authorities to bolster food security and promote digital transformation in agriculture.
The EU’s recognition of Africa’s vulnerability to climate change and its commitment to long-term, impactful engagement were central to the talks. Amb. Tuggar highlighted the importance of projects that deliver tangible economic benefits, ensuring that development initiatives are not only sustainable but also equitable.

Looking ahead, both parties anticipate building upon these discussions at the upcoming Ministerial meeting in Abuja in October 2025. This continued dialogue underscores the growing collaboration between Nigeria and the EU, aiming to address global challenges through shared responsibility and mutual benefit.
Amb. Tuggar’s proactive engagement signals a new era in Nigeria’s foreign policy, characterized by strategic partnerships that prioritize sustainable development and regional stability.
