NUJ FCT Champions Ethical AI Use in Journalism on World Press Freedom Day 2025. By Raymond Enoch

As the world commemorate World Press Freedom Day on May 3, 2025, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, issued a compelling call for the responsible integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in journalism. The council emphasized the necessity for journalists to adapt to technological advancements while steadfastly upholding the core principles of press freedom.

In a statement delivered in Abuja, Comrade Grace Ike, Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, highlighted the dual-edged nature of AI’s impact on the media landscape. She acknowledged AI’s potential to enhance efficiency in content creation, audience engagement, and fact-checking processes. However, she also cautioned against challenges such as issues of authorship, bias, accountability, and the risk of automated censorship.

Comrade Ike urged Nigerian journalists to remain attuned to the local context of their practice, even as they embrace global digital innovations. She warned that increasing dependence on AI tools must not compromise journalistic integrity or undermine press freedom.

This call to action underscores the NUJ FCT’s commitment to ensuring that AI serves as a tool for empowerment rather than a threat to the foundational values of journalism.
