Nigeria Celebrates Zimbabwe at 45, Reaffirms Bonds of Friendship and Shared African Vision By Raymond Enoch.

As Zimbabwe marks its 45th year of independence, Nigeria has extended warm congratulations and heartfelt solidarity with the Southern African nation, reaffirming a deep-rooted bond forged during Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle.

In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja, the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, conveyed his felicitations to Zimbabwe’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Hon. Prof. Amon Murwira. Ambassador Tuggar praised the courage, resilience, and unyielding determination of the Zimbabwean people in their journey toward sovereignty, which was achieved on April 18, 1980.

“The attainment of independence by the people of Zimbabwe remains a remarkable achievement,” the Minister stated, “especially considering the historic role and significant contributions made by the Nigerian people and Government during Zimbabwe’s liberation movement.”

The statement described Zimbabwe’s Independence Day as a symbolic reflection of not only a nation’s triumph over colonial rule but also a shared African narrative of self-determination, unity, and progress. Nigeria commended Zimbabwe for its strides in national development and reaffirmed its commitment to closer ties.

Both countries, as active members of the African Union and other international platforms, continue to share a common vision for peace, economic growth, and regional integration. Nigeria reiterated its unwavering support for Zimbabwe’s socio-economic development and pledged to bolster cooperation in areas of mutual interest such as trade, agriculture, and regional security.

“As we celebrate this historic milestone, Nigeria stands in solidarity with Zimbabwe and looks forward to deepening our longstanding friendship in the spirit of African brotherhood,” the Minister affirmed.

The release, signed by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Spokesperson of the Ministry, concluded with warm wishes for continued peace, prosperity, and enduring partnership between both nations.

Zimbabwe’s independence anniversary not only recalls a defining moment in African history but also serves as a reminder of the continent’s ongoing journey towards unity, development, and shared destiny.
