On the occasion of the 2025 International Women’s Day, Comrade Bassey Ita Ikpang, Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) (FCT) chapter has called for an intensified effort to accelerate gender equality and amplify the voices of rural women.

The year’s theme, “Accelerate Action,” echoes a global push to celebrate the incredible contributions of women across various sectors, while also pressing for continued action in the fight for gender equity.

In her remarks, Comrade Bassey emphasized the role women continue to play in shaping society, from their leadership in politics, business, and technology to their groundbreaking work in health and beyond. “Today, we recognize not only the achievements of women in our society but also the challenges we continue to face, particularly those affecting women in rural areas,” Bassey stated, underscoring the importance of tackling barriers that hinder women’s full participation in society.

As part of the 2025 International Women’s Day, NAWOJ FCT’s sub-theme, “Amplifying the Voice of Rural Women,” highlights the urgency of addressing the significant gender disparities faced by women, especially in rural communities. These women often struggle with limited access to education, healthcare, economic opportunities, and political representation. While acknowledging progress, Bassey stressed that more must be done to ensure women in all sectors of society can thrive and reach their full potential.

“Our goal is clear: we must accelerate actions that bridge the gap for rural women,” she declared. “Women are vital in shaping the future of this nation, and we cannot afford to leave any woman behind.”

This year’s commemoration not only served as a moment of reflection but also as a call to action. NAWOJ FCT’s commitment to the cause includes using the media’s power to elevate gender issues, advocate for policies that empower women, and hold all stakeholders accountable in driving change.

Bassey Ikpang also called on various stakeholders—government agencies, traditional and community leaders, corporate bodies, and the media—to take actionable steps to enhance the status of women, particularly in rural areas. From ensuring the enforcement of gender-equal policies to investing in skill acquisition programs and health services, she emphasized that everyone has a role to play in creating an inclusive society.

She urged the government to create sustainable support systems for rural women, the media to continue amplifying their voices, and corporate bodies to invest in their empowerment. Traditional leaders were also called upon to eliminate cultural practices that undermine the progress of women.

“Together, we must break the barriers hindering women’s development,” Bassey added. “This fight is far from over, but with collective effort, we can shape a future where every woman is empowered to succeed.”

As the celebrations for International Women’s Day 2025 continue, NAWOJ FCT remains unwavering in its dedication to the empowerment of women across all sectors. The organization’s commitment to gender equality is reinforced through strategic partnerships, media advocacy, and capacity-building initiatives aimed at ensuring women’s issues remain a priority in national discourse.

Comrade Bassey implored all Nigerians to “accelerate action” and join in amplifying the voices of rural women, ensuring that the strides made in gender equality are not only celebrated but also sustained through actionable progress.
