The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has commended FCT Minister Nyesom Wike for his transformative infrastructural strides in Abuja while calling for urgent measures to alleviate the growing economic challenges faced by residents.
In a communiqué issued after its inaugural Congress held at the NUJ Secretariat in Utako, Abuja, the union lauded the minister’s efforts in enhancing the capital city’s infrastructure but highlighted rising living costs, erratic power supply, and growing insecurity as critical issues requiring immediate government intervention.
Presided over by Comrade Grace Ike, the Congress witnessed the attendance of over 400 members, including former council leaders and members of the National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ). In her opening address, Ike pledged the executive’s dedication to promoting unity and advancing the welfare of journalists in the FCT.
The NUJ described the soaring cost of living as a heavy burden on Nigerians, urging the Federal Government to implement targeted reforms to ease hardships. The communiqué further decried poor power and water supplies, citing their detrimental effects on businesses and residents, and called for the restoration of essential services.
Expressing concerns over the rising wave of insecurity, including ritual killings, the union emphasized the need for immediate economic and security interventions to protect lives and livelihoods.
The Congress concluded with a renewed commitment to fostering the welfare and professional growth of its members while working towards stronger unity within the union.
