Abuja, Nigeria — The President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, held a meeting on Thursday, January 16, 2025, with H.E. Belarmino Monteiro Silva, the Ambassador of Cabo Verde to Nigeria and ECOWAS. The discussion, which took place in Abuja, centered on enhancing cooperation between ECOWAS and Cabo Verde.

Ambassador Silva provided an update on Cabo Verde’s contributions and ongoing initiatives within the regional bloc. He highlighted Cabo Verde’s payment of the community levy, underscoring the nation’s commitment to regional integration and development. He also shared insights into Cabo Verde’s economic landscape, noting its resilience despite global economic challenges.

Ambassador Silva commended the peaceful conduct of Cabo Verde’s municipal elections in 2024 and expressed optimism about the country’s upcoming legislative and presidential elections in 2026. Additionally, he informed Dr. Touray of the forthcoming inauguration of the ECOWAS Early Warning Centre in Praia, a move that aims to bolster regional security and crisis response capabilities.

Further strengthening regional connectivity, the Ambassador announced the recent launch of the Praia-Dakar-Banjul maritime link. This initiative, currently in a six-month experimental phase, seeks to enhance trade and transport across the region.

The meeting reaffirmed the strong ties between ECOWAS and Cabo Verde, with both leaders emphasizing the importance of collaboration in fostering peace, stability, and economic growth in West Africa.
