Gombe Makes History: Governor Inuwa Signs Disability Protection Bill, Appoints Dr. Adamu as Commission Head
By Raymond Enoch
In a landmark move signaling a new era of inclusion and social equity, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State has signed the Disability Protection Bill into law. The historic legislation marks a significant milestone in the fight for the rights and empowerment of Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in the state, establishing a legal framework to protect their rights and ensure equal opportunities.
The newly signed law seeks to eliminate barriers faced by PWDs in accessing education, healthcare, employment, and public facilities. It also criminalizes discrimination, thereby setting the stage for a more inclusive society where all citizens can thrive regardless of physical, sensory, or mental impairments.
During the signing ceremony held at Government House Gombe, Governor Yahaya emphasized his administration’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by PWDs. “This law is not just a document; it is a testament to our resolve to build a Gombe State where every citizen, regardless of ability, has the chance to live with dignity, contribute meaningfully to society, and achieve their potential,” he stated.
Dr. Adamu Appointed to Lead the Charge
In a related development, Governor Yahaya appointed Dr. Ishiaku Adamu a prominent advocate for disability rights and Chairman Joint Association of Persons with Disability, as the Executive Secretary of the newly established Disability Commission. Dr. Adamu, a seasoned leader in the disability community, has dedicated his career to championing the rights of PWDs and advocating for policies that foster inclusivity.
Speaking at his inauguration, Dr. Adamu expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and vowed to ensure the full implementation of the law. “This is a pivotal moment for PWDs in Gombe State. Our work begins now to translate this law into tangible benefits that will transform lives,” he said.
Speaking at the event, the Speaker of the Gombe State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abubakar Mohammed Luggerewo, noted that the House had meticulously scrutinized every aspect of the bill to ensure its passage aligned with the aspirations of the Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) community.
The Disability Protection Law provides for the creation of an enabling environment for PWDs, including accessible infrastructure in schools, workplaces, and public buildings. It also mandates the establishment of special interventions to support the social and economic integration of PWDs.
Civil society organizations and disability advocates have lauded the move as a progressive step forward. According to Zainab Mohammed, a PWD rights activist in Gombe, “This is a victory for all of us. It sends a strong message that PWDs are an integral part of the society and deserve equal rights and opportunities.”
While the enactment of the law is a significant achievement, stakeholders caution that its success lies in effective implementation. Adequate funding, public awareness campaigns, and collaboration with relevant organizations will be critical to ensuring that the provisions of the law are fully realized.
Gombe’s move has been praised as a model for other Nigerian states yet to pass similar legislation. By prioritizing the needs of PWDs, Governor Yahaya’s administration has set a precedent for breaking barriers and fostering inclusivity.
As the state embarks on this journey, the Disability Protection Law represents not only hope but also a call to action for all citizens to support the vision of a society where everyone can thrive regardless of ability.
