HubPharm Africa clinches $30,000 as ECOWAS backs West Africa’s startup Success, Revolution By Raymond Enoch
Nigeria’s HubPharm Africa has emerged winner of the second edition of the ECOWAS Startup Awards, taking home the grand prize of US$30,000 as the regional bloc intensifies efforts to promote innovation, entrepreneurship and private-sector development across West Africa.
HubPharm Africa was announced winner at the awards ceremony held on September 30, 2026, at the New ECOWAS Headquarters in Abuja, following a competitive process that brought together innovative startups from across the region.
Senegal’s Gaynako emerged first runner-up, while My Opinion of Côte d’Ivoire secured the second runner-up position.
The awards, organised by the ECOWAS Commission through its Directorate of Private Sector and Industry, are part of the Commission’s broader drive to create a stronger regional ecosystem capable of supporting young enterprises, encouraging innovation and unlocking new economic opportunities.
The recognition of HubPharm Africa also highlights the growing capacity of Nigerian startups to compete at the regional level, particularly in sectors where technology and innovation are being deployed to address pressing socio-economic challenges.
Beyond the cash prize and recognition of outstanding startups, the Abuja ceremony marked another significant development with the launch of the ECOWAS Private Sector Development Academy and the ECOWAS Startup Networks.
The two initiatives are expected to provide a structured platform for entrepreneurs and other private-sector actors to build connections, exchange knowledge and gain wider access to business opportunities across the ECOWAS region.
The Startup Networks, in particular, are expected to deepen linkages among entrepreneurs, investors and other stakeholders while helping innovative businesses overcome some of the barriers associated with operating across national borders within the West African market.
The launch of the Private Sector Development Academy is also seen as an important step towards strengthening entrepreneurial capacity, with emphasis on knowledge-sharing, skills development and greater engagement between the private sector and regional institutions.
The second edition of the ECOWAS Startup Awards comes at a time when innovation-driven enterprises are increasingly being viewed as critical to job creation, economic diversification and the development of a competitive regional economy.
With West Africa’s youthful population increasingly embracing technology and digital enterprise, the ECOWAS initiative could provide a platform for promising startups to move beyond individual national markets and tap into the wider regional market.
The Commission’s renewed focus on startups is therefore expected to complement wider regional efforts on trade integration, free movement, digital transformation and private-sector-led economic growth, while encouraging entrepreneurs to develop solutions tailored to West Africa’s unique development challenges.
The successful conclusion of the second ECOWAS Startup Awards, according to the Commission, reinforces its commitment to fostering innovation and creating an enabling environment in which emerging businesses can grow, connect and contribute meaningfully to the region’s economic transformation.
For HubPharm Africa, the $30,000 award represents not only financial support but a major regional endorsement of its innovation, placing the Nigerian startup among the emerging enterprises attracting attention within West Africa’s rapidly evolving entrepreneurial landscape.
