ECOWAS STARTUP AWARDS: WEST AFRICA’S INNOVATION ECO-SYSTEM TAKES CENTRE STAGE By Raymond Enoch
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission has opened the second edition of the ECOWAS Startup Awards in Abuja, Nigeria, with a renewed focus on harnessing innovation and entrepreneurship to accelerate digital transformation, regional integration and sustainable economic development across West Africa.
The three-day event, which runs from September 28 to 30, 2026, is themed “Scaling West African Startups for Digital Transformation, Regional Integration and Sustainable Value Chain Ecosystem Development to Drive Market Access.”
The initiative is designed to provide emerging businesses across the region with opportunities to connect to capital, markets, technology and strategic partnerships capable of helping them expand beyond national borders and participate more effectively in the regional economy.
The awards bring together promising entrepreneurs and innovators operating across six sectors, including technology and innovation, agriculture and tourism, with finalists expected to pitch their businesses before a jury as part of the competitive process.
The top three startups will receive cash prizes of US$30,000, US$20,000 and US$15,000, respectively, providing financial support to strengthen their operations and pursue new growth opportunities.
The scale of participation underscores the growing entrepreneurial energy across the region, with the 2026 awards attracting 8,679 registrations from 12 ECOWAS Member States. Of these, 1,499 applications qualified for further consideration following the evaluation process supported by the International Trade Centre (ITC), while 60 startups emerged as finalists.
Beyond the prize money, the ECOWAS Startup Awards is offering all 60 finalists a six-month acceleration programme, mentorship and investor access, alongside regional visibility and post-event support. The finalists will also gain membership of the ECOWAS Startup Network and access to the ECOWAS Private Sector Development Academy, creating avenues for sustained business development, networking, market expansion and integration into the wider West African entrepreneurial ecosystem.
