Onyemara, Idowu Forge Stronger Christian Unity as CCN Chief Visits Baptist President in Ibadan By Raymond Enoch
The General Secretary of the Christian Council of Nigeria (CCN), His Lordship, the Rt. Revd. Evans Onyemara, Ph.D., has paid a courtesy visit to the newly inducted President and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Baptist Convention (NBC), Rev. Dr. David Olusola Idowu, in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The visit, which took place on Tuesday, brought together two key figures in Nigeria’s Christian leadership and provided an opportunity to strengthen the bonds of fellowship, dialogue and cooperation between the CCN and the Nigerian Baptist Convention.
The engagement is part of the CCN’s continuing interaction with leaders of member churches and other Christian stakeholders, with a focus on deepening ecumenical relationships and promoting greater unity within the Christian community.
Receiving the CCN General Secretary in Ibadan, Rev. Dr. Idowu, who assumed office as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Baptist Convention in August 2026, welcomed the engagement.
Idowu is the eighth indigenous President and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Baptist Convention. He succeeded Rev. Dr. Israel Adelani Akanji and was formally inducted and commissioned on September 18, 2026, at the Baptist International Convention Centre, Lufuwape.
His induction marked the commencement of a new leadership chapter for the Convention and has placed him at the centre of the denomination’s engagement with the wider Nigerian Christian community.
The visit by the CCN General Secretary, coming shortly after his assumption of office, provided an early platform for strengthening institutional and fraternal relations between the two Christian bodies.
Beyond its symbolic significance, the engagement underscored the importance of sustained fellowship and dialogue among Christian leaders, particularly at a time when churches continue to confront issues affecting their members and the wider Nigerian society.
The Christian Council of Nigeria has continued to maintain engagements with church leaders and ecumenical stakeholders as part of efforts to foster cooperation, mutual understanding and a stronger Christian witness.
The Ibadan meeting also reinforced the place of inter-church dialogue in addressing issues of common concern and building stronger relationships among Nigeria’s historic Christian institutions.
The CCN General Secretary is expected to sustain engagements with Christian leaders and member churches as the Council continues its efforts to strengthen ecumenical cooperation and promote Christian unity across the country.
