Idam Urges NAFDAC to Verify Claims of Harmful Chemicals in Sanitary Pads By Raymond Enoch
The Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Weekenders Magazine, Princess Joy Omagha Idam, has called on the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to urgently investigate claims that some sanitary pads may contain potentially harmful chemicals.
Idam said the allegation warrants prompt scientific verification, given the widespread use of sanitary pads by millions of women and girls across Nigeria.
She urged the Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Moji Adeyeye, to commission independent laboratory testing of sanitary pads available in the Nigerian market to establish whether any contain substances capable of posing health risks to consumers.
According to her, the issue should be approached strictly from the standpoint of public health, scientific evidence and consumer protection, rather than speculation or alarm.
> “This is not about creating fear or attacking manufacturers. It is about protecting Nigerian women and girls and giving the public accurate information. NAFDAC must verify these claims and tell Nigerians the truth,” she said.
Idam further called on NAFDAC to make the findings of any investigation publicly available and, where necessary, take appropriate regulatory measures against products found to have violated established safety standards.
She also appealed to manufacturers and importers of sanitary products to cooperate fully with any regulatory investigation, stressing that consumer health and safety must take precedence over commercial interests.
The Weekenders Magazine publisher said women and families deserve confidence in the sanitary products they use regularly, adding that a prompt, transparent and scientifically grounded investigation would help distinguish verified facts from unsubstantiated claims.
She maintained that clear regulatory findings would also enable consumers to make informed decisions based on credible evidence rather than rumours circulating in the public space.
