TMV Hails UBEC Over N100bn Unaccessed Grants Disbursement, Says Move Will Boost Basic Education By Raymond Enoch
The Tinubu Media Volunteers (TMV) has commended the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) for mobilising and disbursing N100 billion in previously unaccessed matching grants to states, describing the initiative as a landmark intervention that will significantly improve basic education across Nigeria.
The group said the intervention came despite the inability of several state governments to provide the required counterpart funding needed to access the grants for the development of primary and junior secondary education.
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Chukwudi Enekwechi, and Secretary, Segun Ogedengbe, TMV praised UBEC’s achievements under its 2025–2031 Strategic Blueprint, noting that the commission had recorded measurable progress in expanding educational infrastructure and strengthening institutional reforms.
According to the statement, UBEC Executive Secretary, Aisha Garba, disclosed during a press luncheon in Abuja that the commission had constructed 4,600 classrooms, renovated more than 6,100 classrooms, provided 2,780 toilets, drilled 678 boreholes, and supplied 334,000 pieces of school furniture nationwide.
TMV noted that the achievements align with the education agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope administration, particularly the decision to unlock previously unaccessed matching grants for the benefit of school children across the country.
The group explained that matching grants are normally accessed after state governments provide a 40 per cent counterpart contribution, a condition many states had failed to meet over the years, leaving substantial education funds unused.
It described UBEC’s mobilisation and disbursement of the N100 billion as a bold and unprecedented step that demonstrates the Federal Government’s determination to improve learning conditions despite challenges at the sub-national level.
TMV also said the commission’s recent reforms have enhanced transparency, strengthened project monitoring, and promoted data-driven decision-making, resulting in more effective implementation of education programmes.
The organisation urged UBEC to sustain the momentum and continue promoting accountability and good governance in the management of education resources.
It further applauded President Tinubu’s administration for approving the release of the funds despite the inability of the affected states to fulfil their counterpart funding obligations, describing the move as a significant milestone in the Federal Government’s commitment to securing the future of Nigerian children through quality basic education.
According to TMV, the release of the previously unaccessed grants underscores the administration’s resolve to ensure that no child is denied access to improved educational opportunities because of funding constraints at the state level.
