FRSC Inaugurates NigeriaRAP Committee to Tackle Roads Fatalities Across Nigeria. By Raymond Enoch

In a decisive move to strengthen road infrastructure safety and reduce fatalities on Nigerian highways, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has inaugurated the Nigeria Road Assessment Programme (NigeriaRAP) Steering Committee, a strategic body tasked with driving safer road designs and improving protection for road users across the country.

The inauguration, performed by FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, at the Corps National Headquarters in Abuja, marks a major step in Nigeria’s efforts to align with global road safety standards and tackle the growing challenge of road traffic crashes through evidence-based infrastructure management.

Speaking at the inaugural meeting, the Corps Marshal described the development as a significant milestone in the country’s road safety journey, stressing that road crashes remain one of the most pressing public health and development concerns worldwide.

He noted that while enforcement and public enlightenment remain critical, safer road infrastructure is essential to preventing crashes and saving lives, particularly for vulnerable road users.

NigeriaRAP, established through a partnership between the FRSC and the International Road Assessment Programme, is designed to systematically assess road infrastructure, identify high-risk corridors and promote engineering interventions capable of reducing crash risks.

According to Mohammed, the programme is anchored on strengthening local partnerships, deepening international collaboration and promoting the attainment of Three-Star Road Safety Ratings and above on Nigerian roads.

Tracing the evolution of the initiative, the Corps Marshal recalled that Nigeria’s road assessment journey began with the inauguration of a stakeholders’ committee in February 2021 and gained momentum with the signing of a National Licence Agreement between the FRSC and iRAP on November 18, 2025, formally establishing NigeriaRAP in the country.

He explained that the newly inaugurated Steering Committee would provide strategic leadership, policy direction and coordination necessary for the successful implementation of the programme nationwide.

The committee brings together a broad coalition of public and private sector stakeholders, including the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency, Federal Ministry of Works, Federal Ministry of Transportation, Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute, Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology, Automobile and Touring Club of Nigeria, KRSD Foundation, Green Light Initiative and other strategic partners committed to improving road safety outcomes in Nigeria.

The Corps Marshal commended members of the committee for their commitment to the initiative and urged them to approach the assignment with dedication and urgency.

He expressed optimism that sustained collaboration, strategic investments and data-driven road safety interventions would significantly reduce road traffic deaths and injuries while creating a safer and more efficient transportation system for Nigerians.

Industry observers view the inauguration as a critical step towards transforming Nigeria’s road network from a crash-prone environment into a safer mobility system, particularly as the country seeks to meet international road safety targets and reduce the human and economic costs associated with traffic crashes.

With the Steering Committee now in place, expectations are high that NigeriaRAP will accelerate efforts to identify hazardous road sections, improve infrastructure standards and ultimately save thousands of lives on the nation’s roads.
