ECOWAS Transforms Benin Research Centre into Regional Hub of Scientific Excellence By Raymond Enoch
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has strengthened its commitment to scientific research and regional integration by upgrading the Applied Microbiology and Pharmacology of Natural Substances Research Unit (URMAPHA) at the University of Abomey-Calavi in Benin into a regional reference laboratory for scientific excellence.
The development was made possible through ECOWAS’ Research and Innovation Support Programme (PARI), which provided major funding to modernise the laboratory’s facilities and enhance its research capacity.
The investment has also encouraged stronger collaboration among researchers and institutions in Benin, Côte d’Ivoire and Togo, creating a platform for the exchange of knowledge, research experience and best practices across the sub-region.
The impact of the support was highlighted during a PARI evaluation meeting held in Cotonou from June 9 to 12, 2026. As part of the programme, scientists from across West Africa toured the upgraded facility to assess the progress made through ECOWAS’ intervention.
The laboratory has now emerged as a leading centre for scientific research in the region, with the capacity to patent locally developed innovations, attract international researchers, including those from Europe, and provide advanced training for young West African scientists.
Researchers say the transformation of URMAPHA demonstrates how targeted regional investment in science and innovation can strengthen research institutions while addressing the region’s development needs.
The initiative is also expected to boost scientific cooperation among ECOWAS member states, promote innovation-driven development and position West Africa as an emerging centre for globally competitive research.
The PARI programme remains one of ECOWAS’ flagship initiatives aimed at supporting research, innovation and knowledge sharing as key drivers of sustainable development and regional integration.
