Beautiful Beginning Academy Wins NUJ-FCT 2026 Secondary School Media Literacy Quiz By Raymond Enoch

As part of efforts to revive press clubs in secondary schools and promote media literacy among young people, the FCT Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists on Thursday organised a secondary school quiz competition on media literacy and journalism in Abuja.

Beautiful Beginning Academy, Abuja, emerged overall winner after defeating Cedar Hall Academy, Lugbe, 8–6 in a keenly contested tie-breaker following a 205-point draw at the end of the second round.

In the opening round, Government Senior Secondary School (GSS) Garki scored 70 points, while GSS Gwarimpa recorded 80 points. Cedar Hall Academy, Lugbe, secured 95 points, while Beautiful Beginning Academy led the round with 115 points.

At the end of the second round, GSS Garki scored 40 points, GSS Gwarimpa earned 80 points, Cedar Hall Academy scored 110 points, while Beautiful Beginning Academy recorded 90 points, resulting in a tie that was eventually decided through a tie-breaker.

Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Grace Ike, said the competition was organised to mentor younger generations on the role of the media and encourage the revival of press clubs across schools in the Federal Capital Territory.

She commended the participating schools for their impressive performances and urged teachers to sustain activities within their press clubs.

> “Teachers, please organise your press clubs and, once in a while, host events and invite the NUJ-FCT Council; we will come,” she said.

According to her, the initiative would further promote media literacy, mentorship, intellectual growth, and community engagement among students.

> “The NUJ-FCT Council will continue to create opportunities that empower young people and promote educational and media-related activities within our schools,” she added.

Earlier, the Vice Chairman of the council and Coordinator of Press Clubs, Yahaya Ndambabo, said the programme reflected the council’s commitment to promoting journalism, media literacy, intellectual development, and responsible communication among youths.

He noted that strengthening press clubs in schools would help students develop critical thinking, communication skills, confidence, leadership qualities, and a growing interest in journalism and public affairs.

Representatives of the Secondary Education Board, teachers, and other stakeholders in the education sector attended the event.

Some students who spoke after the competition described the initiative as timely and impactful, noting that it was the first media literacy quiz competition of its kind they had participated in.

The high point of the event was the presentation of awards and cash prizes to the winning schools by the Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike.
