The 14th edition of the ECOWAS African Wrestling Tournament (TOLAC 14) ended in thrilling fashion as Senegal retained its title, defeating Nigeria 3–2 in a fiercely contested final to emerge overall champion of the regional championship held at the Serrekunda East Mini Football Stadium in The Gambia.
The Senegalese side, popularly known as the Lions, showcased resilience, skill and dominance throughout the three-day tournament to maintain their position as West Africa’s wrestling champions. The victory earned Senegal the championship trophy, gold medals and a cash prize of $10,000.
Nigeria finished as runners-up with a reward of $6,000, while host nation The Gambia secured third place and received $3,000 in the team category.
Beyond the excitement inside the arena, TOLAC 14 once again reinforced ECOWAS’ commitment to regional integration, cultural diplomacy and peaceful coexistence among member states through sports. The championship brought together athletes, officials and supporters from across West Africa, promoting unity, friendship and shared cultural identity through traditional wrestling — one of the region’s oldest sporting traditions.
The tournament also highlighted the growing importance of sports as a tool for regional cooperation, youth engagement and socio-cultural exchange within the ECOWAS community.
Spectators witnessed high-level competition across various weight categories, with participating countries displaying remarkable strength, discipline and sportsmanship in an atmosphere of solidarity and African pride.
