Gallantry in Service: Nigerian Troops Shine as NIGCOY 10 Bags ECOMIG Medals in The Gambia By Raymond Enoch
In a proud moment for Nigeria and regional peacekeeping, Nigeria Company 10 (NIGCOY 10) of the ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia (ECOMIG) has been honoured with the prestigious ECOMIG Medal in a colourful parade held in Yundum on Wednesday, April 22, 2026.
The award, presented to officers and men of the contingent, recognises their outstanding dedication, discipline, and unwavering commitment to maintaining democracy, peace, and stability in The Gambia. The event, marked by pomp and ceremony, drew dignitaries from across the diplomatic, security, and political space.
Speaking during the ceremony, the Nigerian Contingent Commander, Lieutenant Colonel S.A. Agada, disclosed that the team was inducted into the mission on July 1, 2025. He noted that the contingent, made up of personnel from the Nigerian Army and Nigerian Air Force, has worked tirelessly alongside other ECOMIG forces and The Gambia’s security agencies to achieve the ECOWAS mandate.
Agada reaffirmed the contingent’s resolve to continue upholding the mission’s objectives, stressing that their efforts have been guided by professionalism and a strong sense of duty.
Also addressing the gathering, the Force Commander of ECOMIG, Colonel Aliou Tine, praised the Nigerian troops for their discipline and dedication. He described them as worthy ambassadors of ECOWAS, highlighting their impactful civil-military cooperation initiatives within host communities. He urged them to remain steadfast in their responsibilities.
In his remarks, The Gambia’s Minister of Interior, Honourable Abdoulie Sanyang, conveyed the appreciation of the President, government, and people of The Gambia to Nigeria for its consistent support. He commended the contingent’s sacrifice and professionalism in sustaining peace and stability in the country.
Delivering the keynote address, the ECOWAS Special Representative and Head of Mission in The Gambia, Her Excellency Madam Miatta Lilly French, applauded the contingent’s operational excellence and strong community engagement. She charged the troops to maintain high standards of professionalism and remain committed to the broader goal of global peace.
The ceremony attracted a wide array of dignitaries, including members of the diplomatic corps, top government officials, security chiefs, academia, and captains of industry.
Highlights of the event included an impressive silent drill display, decoration of personnel with medals, cake cutting, performances by the Gambia Armed Forces Band, and a colourful unity cultural dance by the Nigerian contingent.
The medal parade stands as a testament to Nigeria’s enduring role in regional peacekeeping and its commitment to promoting stability across West Africa.
