ECOWAS Vice President’s Office Holds Strategic Retreat to Boost Teamwork and Deliver Mandate

By Raymond Enoch

The Office of the Vice President of the Economic Community of West African States has taken a major step toward improving its internal operations, following a four-day annual retreat designed to strengthen teamwork and enhance efficiency.

The retreat, held from April 14 to 17, 2026, at the CEEDAPEG Hotel in Uyo, brought together staff members, consultants, and young professionals under the theme, “Effective Skills for Strengthening Team Spirit.”

The gathering focused on reviewing how effectively the Office is delivering on its mandate, while also addressing internal challenges that may be slowing down performance. Participants engaged in open discussions and practical sessions aimed at building trust, improving communication, and encouraging accountability across all levels of the institution.

A key outcome of the retreat was the push for a shared vision among staff. By aligning everyone on common goals and strengthening understanding of teamwork principles, the Office aims to foster a more united and productive working environment.

The sessions also helped clarify roles and responsibilities within various operational units, ensuring that every team member understands what is expected of them. This clarity is expected to reduce overlaps, improve coordination, and speed up project delivery.

In addition, participants proposed new ways to improve communication and collaboration during program implementation. These ideas are expected to streamline internal processes and make the Office more responsive in carrying out its duties.

Another important focus was planning for the future. The retreat explored strategies to ensure a smooth transition for incoming leadership, including sustainable team-building mechanisms that will keep the institution strong beyond current leadership.

At the end of the retreat, a detailed analysis of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and challenges was conducted. The findings will now serve as a roadmap to improve internal governance and strengthen the overall performance of the Office.

With this renewed focus on teamwork and efficiency, the Office of the Vice President is positioning itself to deliver more effectively on its responsibilities within ECOWAS and better serve the region.
