Nigeria Reaffirms Unwavering Solidarity with Somalia, Defends Its Sovereignty and Territorial Unity. By Raymond Enoch
The Federal Government of Nigeria has restated its firm commitment to the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political unity of the Federal Republic of Somalia, describing the stability of the East African nation as critical to peace and security across the Horn of Africa and the wider continent. Nigeria’s position underscores its long-standing adherence to the principles of international law as enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations and the Constitutive Act of the African Union.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and signed by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, anipr, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria declared its unambiguous solidarity with the Government and people of Somalia, affirming recognition of Mogadishu as the sole legitimate authority representing the Somali state.
The statement emphasized Nigeria’s rejection of any actions, rhetoric, or external interference capable of undermining Somalia’s constitutional order or territorial integrity.
Nigeria commended the Government of Somalia for its resilience and continued efforts toward peacebuilding, national reconciliation, and institutional rebuilding despite persistent security and political challenges.
According to the statement, Nigeria stands firmly against any attempt to weaken Somalia’s unity, stressing that such actions could further destabilize the region.
Highlighting the broader regional implications, Nigeria noted that Somalia’s stability is inseparable from the peace and security of the Horn of Africa and Africa as a whole. The Federal Government reaffirmed its readiness to support Somalia through multilateral platforms, regional cooperation, and international partnerships aimed at fostering sustainable peace and development.
The statement further urged regional and international actors to strictly respect Somalia’s sovereignty and to refrain from recognising any part of its territory as an independent entity, warning that such moves would only escalate tensions and complicate ongoing efforts at national recovery.
Nigeria’s position, the Ministry said, reflects its enduring foreign policy commitment to African unity, respect for sovereignty, and collective security, while reinforcing its role as a responsible stakeholder in continental and global peace efforts.
