Nigeria, Benin Reaffirm Joint Commitment to Democratic Stability and Regional Security at Abuja Press Briefing. By Raymond Enoch

Nigeria and the Republic of Benin had strengthened their united front for democratic governance and regional security during a joint press briefing held in Abuja on the margins of the 95th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers.

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tugar, and his Beninese counterpart, H.E. Olushegun Adjadi Bakari, addressed journalists from across West Africa and the international press, offering fresh updates on the political and security landscape following the recent failed coup attempt in Benin Republic.

Minister Bakari expressed the Government of Benin’s “profound gratitude” to Nigeria and the ECOWAS Authority for what he described as their swift, coordinated and decisive intervention in safeguarding democratic order in the country. He emphasised that Benin remains firmly committed to constitutional governance and regional cooperation, noting that the solidarity demonstrated by Nigeria was pivotal in thwarting destabilisation attempts.

Reiterating Nigeria’s strategic responsibility in the sub-region, Ambassador Tugar assured that Nigeria would continue to work hand-in-hand with ECOWAS Member States and global partners to counter rising security threats and socio-economic pressures affecting West Africa.

He stressed that regional security cannot be treated in isolation from democracy, stability and development, adding that Nigeria remains fully aligned with ECOWAS mechanisms aimed at restoring peace, protecting democratic institutions and supporting vulnerable communities.

The joint briefing underscored a renewed Nigeria–Benin partnership anchored on mutual security interests, shared democratic values and a collective resolve to strengthen the resilience of the West African region.
