ECOWAS Deploys 120-Member Mission to Guinea-Bissau, Reaffirms Stand on Credible Elections.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has deployed a high-powered Election Observation Mission (EOM) to Guinea-Bissau, in a move described as a defining moment for democratic consolidation in the region.
Senior leadership of the Mission has arrived in Bissau, underscoring ECOWAS’ commitment to transparent, credible and peaceful elections in the country.
Heading the Mission is Ambassador Issufu Baba Braimah Kamara, supported by Ambassador Abdel-Fatau Musah, ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security. Their presence is expected to set the tone for an operation anchored in professionalism, neutrality and regional solidarity.
The Mission brings together 120 observers who will be deployed across Guinea-Bissau in medium- and short-term configurations. They are backed by the Electoral Assistance Division under its Acting Head, Serigne Mamadou Ka.
According to ECOWAS officials, the observers have undergone intensive technical briefings on methodology, reporting standards, deployment protocols and contextual analysis to ensure readiness at every level.
The deployment is being carried out under the authority of the President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, and is fully aligned with the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance.
Describing participation in the process as “a great honour,” an ECOWAS representative noted that moments like this reaffirm the power of regional cooperation, strong institutions and shared democratic values in West Africa.
With the Mission now on the ground in Bissau, ECOWAS says it is moving forward with clear purpose: for democracy, for peace and for the people of Guinea-Bissau and the wider region.
