Animal Feeds Industry Establishment: ECOWAS Partners AECID, Set to Transform Food Sector.

By Raymond Enoch

In a bold step toward transforming the food and livestock sector across West Africa and the Sahel, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), through its Regional Agency for Agriculture and Food (ARAA), has convened a high-level regional workshop in Abuja, Nigeria, focused on strengthening the animal feed industry. The initiative, organised in collaboration with Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Livestock Development and supported by the European Union and the Spanish Cooperation (AECID), aims to drive regional policies that improve feed governance, quality, and competitiveness across Member States.

The workshop brings together senior policymakers, researchers, and industry experts to chart a new course for feed development, translating scientific evidence and innovations into actionable policy frameworks.

By harmonising regional standards for feed quality, safety, and trade, ECOWAS and its partners seek to enhance livestock productivity, boost agribusiness opportunities, and improve food security across the region. The outcomes are expected to guide Member States in building a resilient animal feed sector capable of supporting sustainable growth, empowering rural economies, and securing livelihoods in West Africa and the wider Sahel region.
