President José Maria Pereira Neves of Cabo Verde has declared his nation’s unwavering commitment to the vision of a stronger, more stable, and prosperous Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

His remarks came during an official visit to the ECOWAS Commission headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria, on Thursday, October 2, 2025.

Welcomed by the President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President Neves engaged in high-level discussions centered on regional cooperation, political stability, and economic integration across the West African sub-region.

“Cabo Verde remains firmly committed, alongside other Member States, to building a more unified and resilient ECOWAS,” President Neves said, highlighting the importance of strengthening multilateral collaboration to meet the aspirations of West Africa’s people.

The meeting also touched on the evolving political landscape in the region, with a particular focus on ECOWAS’s relationship with the Alliance of Sahel States (AES)—comprising Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger—three countries that have taken divergent political paths in recent years. While details of the discussions on the AES were not disclosed, the dialogue signals ongoing efforts within ECOWAS to maintain engagement with all stakeholders despite political tensions.

President Touray, in welcoming his Cabo Verdean counterpart, commended the island nation for its consistent support for ECOWAS principles and its constructive role in regional affairs. He emphasized the need for collective action in confronting security, governance, and economic challenges facing the bloc.

President Neves’ visit marks a renewed effort by Cabo Verde to actively contribute to ECOWAS’s vision of deeper integration and inclusive growth, despite its geographical location outside the West African mainland. Cabo Verde has often been lauded for its stable democratic institutions and commitment to regional cooperation.

As ECOWAS continues to navigate a complex geopolitical environment, President Neves’s visit sends a clear message: unity and cooperation remain the bedrock of a prosperous West Africa.
