In a devastating crash that has plunged families into mourning, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed that 21 people lost their lives in a fatal head-on collision on Sunday, July 6, 2025, along the Zaria-Kano Expressway.
In a press statement signed by Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, the Corps Public Education Officer at FRSC Headquarters in Abuja, the incident occurred at about 8:20 a.m. at Kasuwar Dogo, Dakatsale, and involved a commercial Toyota Hiace bus and a heavy-duty DAF truck. Preliminary investigations by FRSC rescue and crash investigation teams revealed that the accident was caused by a route violation—the Toyota Hiace driver drove against traffic flow, resulting in a deadly head-on collision.
According to the FRSC, 24 people were involved in the crash. Out of these, 21 individuals—comprising 19 male adults and 2 female adults—were killed on the spot. Three others sustained injuries and were rescued by emergency responders.
The remains of the deceased have been deposited at Nasarawa Hospital in Kano, while FRSC personnel and other agencies worked swiftly to clear the scene and restore normal traffic along the busy expressway.
Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and assured the public that a full investigation is underway to determine all contributing factors to the tragedy. He emphasized that the FRSC remains committed to preventing future occurrences through strict enforcement of traffic laws and intensified public awareness campaigns.
“The FRSC once again warns all motorists to shun deadly road practices such as route violations, driving against traffic, speeding, and reckless overtaking,” the statement read. “These dangerous habits continue to cause unnecessary loss of life.”
Members of the public are encouraged to report unsafe driving behavior via the FRSC mobile app, by dialing the toll-free emergency number 122, or by contacting any nearby FRSC patrol team.
