WEST AFRICAN WOMEN IN ENERGY FORUM (ForWE): ECOWAS’ GIANT STEP FOR WOMEN INCLUSION IN THE ENERGY SECTOR.
By Raymond Enoch
The energy sector in West Africa is experiencing a pivotal shift, as the launch of the Forum for Women in Energy in West Africa (ForWE) on March 10, 2025, in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, signalling a new era of inclusion and empowerment for women in the industry.

This landmark event, was initiated by the West African Power Pool (WAPP) in collaboration with the World Bank and GIZ, represents a powerful commitment to diversifying and strengthening the region’s energy sector with Women inclusion .
ForWE is not just another forum—it is a dynamic platform that aims to empower women professionals, students, and entrepreneurs within the energy sector by offering training, networking, and exchange opportunities. Its focus is on dismantling the barriers that have historically limited women’s access to leadership positions and decision-making roles in this male-dominated industry.

The significance of ForWE cannot be overstated. As the energy sector plays a central role in economic development and poverty alleviation, the inclusion of women is not merely a matter of equality but also one of sustainability and growth. Women’s participation is essential for the sector’s modernization, innovation, and for meeting the region’s ambitious energy goals. Their involvement ensures a more comprehensive approach to energy solutions—one that addresses the needs and perspectives of all sectors of society.
ForWE’s mission is clear: to create a pathway for the next generation of female leaders in the energy industry. It provides women with concrete opportunities to hone their skills, enhance their visibility, and position themselves as key players in shaping the future of energy in West Africa. Through its initiatives, ForWE also aims to cultivate a culture of mentorship, fostering collaboration among seasoned professionals and emerging talents.

The importance of this forum lies not just in its objectives but in the broader context of gender equality and empowerment in Africa. As a sector integral to economic progress, energy presents both challenges and opportunities, and it is crucial that women are part of the dialogue that shapes the future of energy. The launch of ForWE marks a momentous step towards this goal, reinforcing the commitment of ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) to inclusive growth.
The energy sector stands at the crossroads of innovation and opportunity, and with initiatives like ForWE, the potential for women to lead and drive change has never been greater. The future of West African energy is one where women’s contributions are recognized and their leadership is integral to the region’s success.
The Forum at the time when ECOWAS is commemorating Fifty years of its existence indicate the premium the Commission places on gender inclusion.
As the forum continues to grow, it holds the promise of transforming the energy landscape, ensuring that women are not just participants but powerful catalysts for the energy revolution in West Africa. Through ForWE, West Africa is making history—one where gender equity in the energy sector is no longer a distant dream, but a reality on the horizon.
