TrustAfrica Supports Bold Move to End Violence Against Women in Nigerian Communities.
By Raymond Enoch
In a strategic move to eradicate the scourge of violence against women and girls (VAWG), ACEIDEV—supported by the Nigerian Women Trust Fund, Ford Foundation, and powered by the unwavering backing of TrustAfrica—has launched a series of community-driven sensitization programs across key areas in Abuja, including Bwari and Karu.
The latest wave of outreach efforts, aimed at amplifying women’s voices and empowering survivors, brought together women from diverse backgrounds in the Bwari Area Council. Through interactive sessions led by trained facilitators, participants were equipped with vital knowledge on recognizing abuse, understanding reporting mechanisms, and accessing legal, medical, and psychological support.
The event created an open and safe space where women shared personal experiences, discussed their rights, and learned about the devastating impacts of VAWG on families and society. The momentum didn’t end there.
As part of a strategic advocacy visit to the Nyanya Chief Palace, ACEIDEV sought the partnership of His Royal Highness Chief Danladi Iya, a respected traditional authority, in amplifying the fight against gender-based violence. The Chief emphasized the indispensable role of traditional leaders in shaping public attitudes and vowed to support initiatives that promote gender equality and protection of women’s rights.
Another key session held with the Catholic Women Organisation (CWO) of St. Ignatius of Antioch Catholic Church in Karu on May 3rd focused on awareness, capacity building, and creating a strong peer-support network among women. Participants left the session inspired to act, requesting similar engagements for the youth to ensure early education on respectful relationships and gender justice.
Two sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) cases were reported during the programs, and ACEIDEV has promptly connected the survivors to appropriate support services—demonstrating the real-time impact of its interventions.
Through these efforts, and with continued support from TrustAfrica, ACEIDEV is igniting a powerful grassroots movement against VAWG. Their mission is clear: to foster a safe, equitable society where every woman and girl can live with dignity, free from fear.
“We will not be silent anymore,” declared one participant. And with the wind of support behind them, they won’t have to be.
