STRIKE: NIGERIA ECONOMY SHUTS DOWN AS WORKERS STAY AWAY.

Raymond Enoch

The Nation -wide strike action which commenced today led by the Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) has crippled the economic activities across the country.

Monitoring the exercise in some states, Paradigm News gathered that the strike action was effective as workers stayed away from their office.

In Jalingo, the Taraba State capital workers were visibly absent from work as the monitoring of the labour unions locked up the State Secretariat.

In Yola, the Adamawa State Capital the workers also complied with the strike action directive leaving the ever busy streets and offices empty.

From Kano, Zamfara, Nassarawa, Gombe, Bauchi and Kaduna States, it was gathered that the strike action was also in full compliance.

In Abuja there appeared to be some confusion as several workers reported to work at the Federal Secretariat only to find their offices locked and have to return back home out of frustration.

At the Police Secondary School in the FCT, the school was locked up in compliance with the NLC directives.

Hotels and entertainments places are not left out as total black-out around the country rendered regular visitors in darkness and low patronage.

Also at the FCT, Banks and fnancial institutions complied with the NLC directives as Banks are seen to be while some customers who turned up for businesses are frustrated at the bank premises .

It would appear that workers and their leadership both in the public and private sector are united in the present wage negotiation process that seem to have ended in deadlock Analyst and experts are calling on Federal Government and Labor leaders to resolve the impasse in the interest of the country
