NIMC Issues Crucial Guidelines on Self-Service NIN Modification Portal to Safeguard User Accounts.

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has issued a public advisory outlining crucial guidelines for accessing and managing self-service accounts on the National Identification Number (NIN) portal. The new measures are designed to protect the security of user accounts and ensure seamless modifications to NIN data.
The press release, signed by Dr. Kayode Adegoke, Head of Corporate Communications at NIMC, highlights several important aspects users must be aware of to avoid disruptions when using the portal. These include device and browser limitations, cache clearing warnings, and unlock attempt restrictions.
One of the most critical guidelines stresses that access to a user’s self-service account is tied to the specific browser and device used during the initial registration process. According to NIMC, users are only permitted to log in using the same device and browser previously used for registration. Attempts to access the account from a different browser or device may result in issues that could prevent users from modifying their NIN data.
NIMC further advises users to be cautious about clearing their browser cache. While it may seem like a routine action to clear cache, doing so can reset the browser and lock the account, which may lead to difficulties in accessing the portal. Should this happen, users will be required to undergo an unlinking process to restore their accounts, a step that could cause significant delays.
The Commission also announced a strict limit on the number of unlock attempts users can make if their account is locked. Users will be allowed a maximum of five unlock attempts. Once this limit is reached, no further requests will be processed, potentially leading to prolonged access issues unless the unlinking process is followed.
These measures, according to NIMC, are part of a broader effort to safeguard the identity of Nigerian citizens and prevent unauthorized modifications to NIN records. The Commission encourages all users to follow these guidelines carefully to avoid unnecessary disruptions in service.
In his statement, Dr. Kayode Adegoke reiterated the importance of these guidelines in maintaining the security of users’ data while using the NIN portal. He also reassured the public that NIMC is committed to offering continuous improvements in service delivery, ensuring that Nigerians have a smooth and secure experience when accessing their NIN records.
For users who encounter issues or need assistance, NIMC has provided dedicated customer support services. The public is encouraged to reach out to the support team through the official email: nimccustomercare@nimc.gov.ng.
The release of these guidelines marks a significant step in the Commission’s ongoing efforts to improve the digital infrastructure supporting the National Identification Number system. By adhering to the instructions, NIN holders can ensure that their accounts remain secure and accessible without encountering unnecessary obstacles.
