As part of efforts to empower Nigerian women for national development, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Chapter of the League of Women Voters of Nigeria (NILOWV), in collaboration with the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC), has organized a one-day training session aimed at increasing women’s participation in governance and decision making process.

The training, held at NILOWV’s Liaison Office in Abuja, focused on “Strengthening Capacity on Engagement With Stakeholders on The 74 Special Seats Bill.” It sought to enlighten women on the bill’s provisions and encourage active involvement in influencing public policy.

Hon. Irene Awunah, NILOWV’s National President, emphasized the need for equal representation of women in government and called for the swift passage of the 74 Special Seats Bill to guarantee more female representation in Nigeria’s parliaments.

Nkiru Uzodi, Program Manager at PLAC, highlighted that increased female representation in governance would enhance decision-making processes, promote national cohesion, and foster good governance.

Supporting the initiative, the President of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Aisha Bura, represented by Board of Trustee Member Anna Daniels, reiterated the importance of empowering women voters to drive positive change in the country.

NILOWV operates 14 Standing Committees addressing key areas of concern for women, including gender rights, education, healthcare, empowerment, and advocacy. Through such initiatives, the league continues to champion women’s active participation in shaping Nigeria’s political and policy landscape.
