The President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, on Wednesday warmly received members of Nigeria’s House of Representatives Committee on Cooperation and Integration in Africa at the ECOWAS Commission Headquarters in Abuja.
The strategic familiarization visit marked a significant step towards reinforcing legislative collaboration between the regional institution and Nigeria’s National Assembly.

The delegation of lawmakers, led by the Committee’s leadership, emphasized their commitment to fostering stronger ties with ECOWAS institutions in pursuit of regional integration, democratic governance, and sustainable socio-economic growth across West Africa. The engagement highlighted the mutual importance of parliamentary diplomacy and legislative synergy in achieving the goals of the ECOWAS Vision 2050.
Welcoming the delegation, Dr. Touray lauded the proactive approach of the Nigerian parliamentarians and reaffirmed the Commission’s dedication to promoting peace, democracy, and economic integration throughout the sub-region. He noted that ECOWAS continues to play a pivotal role in enhancing regional stability through support for credible elections, conflict prevention mechanisms, and cross-border trade facilitation.
“The strength of regional integration lies in the collective resolve of institutions—executive, legislative, and civil society—working together to uphold democratic values, build economic resilience, and preserve peace,” Dr. Touray stated. “The support of national legislatures like Nigeria’s is vital to achieving these objectives.”
Discussions during the visit also touched on the need for harmonizing national laws with ECOWAS protocols, strengthening parliamentary oversight on regional commitments, and ensuring the active participation of citizens in the integration process.
The lawmakers commended ECOWAS for its leadership in addressing political and security challenges within the region and pledged continued collaboration in advocating for reforms that enhance good governance, economic opportunities, and youth engagement.
The visit concluded with a reaffirmation of the shared vision for a more integrated, prosperous, and democratic West Africa—driven by cooperative action between ECOWAS and national parliaments.
