As tensions escalate dramatically in the Middle East following the outbreak of open hostilities between the State of Israel and the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Federal Government of Nigeria has moved to safeguard its citizens caught in the volatile region.
Through an official press statement signed by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government announced that it is finalizing emergency evacuation plans for Nigerians stranded in both countries.
The announcement is coming amidst growing international alarm over the deepening conflict, with civilians in both nations facing heightened insecurity, disrupted infrastructure, and limited access to essential services.
“The Federal Government is finalizing arrangements for the emergency evacuation of stranded Nigerians in both countries,” the statement read.
The Ministry has directed all affected Nigerian citizens to strictly adhere to local security advisories and to immediately contact the nearest Nigerian Embassy or Mission for registration and further instructions. The embassies in Tel Aviv and Tehran have reportedly been working round the clock to maintain communication with Nigerian communities and coordinate logistical support in preparation for evacuation.
“The Ministry commends the efforts put in place by our Missions in Tel Aviv, Israel, and Tehran, Iran, for their dedication and commitment to reaching out to the Nigerian community in these difficult times,” the statement added.
While the evacuation strategy is being operationalized, Nigeria has also taken a firm diplomatic stance on the international stage, calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities between the warring parties. The Federal Government appealed to all actors to embrace peaceful dialogue, uphold international humanitarian law, and prioritize the protection of civilians in the affected zones.
“Nigeria stands firm in its support for the peaceful resolution of conflicts and reaffirms its longstanding commitment to regional and global peace and stability,” the statement emphasized.
Sources within the Foreign Ministry revealed that Nigeria is working in close coordination with international partners, humanitarian agencies, and local authorities to ensure the safe passage of its nationals, while also monitoring developments that could impact the pace and safety of the evacuation efforts.
The Ministry assured that regular updates will be disseminated through official government channels to inform the public and concerned families about the progress of evacuation operations.
This latest development underscores Nigeria’s proactive commitment to citizen welfare and its broader role in promoting peace amid rising global insecurity.
