By Raymond Enoch
The Federal Republic of Nigeria will host top officials from the European Union (EU) in Abuja from Tuesday, July 1st to Wednesday, July 2nd, 2025, for a pivotal Senior Officials Meeting aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation and laying the groundwork for the upcoming Nigeria-EU Ministerial Meeting.
This significant diplomatic engagement was announced in a press release signed by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on Saturday, June 28, 2025.
At the heart of the high-level discussions are shared strategic goals, including the enhancement of peace and security, governance reforms, economic development, and climate resilience. The meeting will be co-chaired by Ambassador Janet Olisa, Director of the Regions Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Mr. Mathieu Briens, Deputy Managing Director for Africa at the European External Action Service.
According to the Ministry, the overarching objectives of the meeting are twofold:
First, to consolidate ongoing partnerships and identify new avenues for collaboration between Nigeria and the EU, and second, to map out a comprehensive agenda for the forthcoming Ministerial Meeting expected to follow this preparatory dialogue.
The agenda promises a broad scope of dialogue, covering multilateral and regional cooperation, humanitarian concerns, migration dynamics, trade and investment opportunities, and sustainable development initiatives. Notably, areas such as science, technology, innovation, digital transformation, and green economy transition will also feature prominently.
The Ministry underscored that the Nigeria-EU relationship is built on a foundation of shared democratic values, mutual interests, and a commitment to multilateralism and a rules-based international order.
As Abuja prepares to host its European partners, this meeting is poised to strengthen diplomatic, economic, and developmental bridges between both sides in a rapidly evolving global landscape.
