Nigeria has officially congratulated the Federal Republic of Germany on the election of Friedrich Merz as the country’s new Chancellor, describing the outcome as a testament to Germany’s enduring democratic values.

In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, Nigeria praised the peaceful and transparent electoral process that led to Merz’s emergence, after securing 325 votes in the 630-seat Bundestag on Tuesday, May 6.

“The Federal Republic of Nigeria extends its warm congratulations… and commends Germany’s strong democratic traditions,” the statement read.

Nigeria also expressed optimism about deepening its strategic partnership with Germany under the new leadership, especially in key areas such as trade, investment, security, and sustainable development.

The message further reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to advancing multilateral cooperation through platforms like the United Nations.

As two influential players in their respective regions, Nigeria and Germany have maintained long-standing diplomatic and economic ties. The congratulatory message underscores Abuja’s intent to not only sustain but expand this relationship under Chancellor Merz’s tenure.

The statement concluded with best wishes for Merz’s success and a pledge to work closely with his administration “for the benefit of both nations and the global community.”
