Maritime Security Experts Meet in Abidjan to Advance YARIS Transfer to Yaoundé Architecture
By Raymond Enoch
Experts and representatives from regional and international institutions specializing in maritime security have convened in Abidjan from February 18 to 20, 2025, for the Second Technical Meeting on the transfer of YARIS (Yaoundé Architecture Regional Information System) to the broader Yaoundé Architecture.

The high-level gathering aims to finalize the transition of YARIS, a critical maritime information management system, to enhance coordination and information sharing among African coastal states.
The platform plays a pivotal role in bolstering maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea, an area frequently threatened by piracy, illicit trafficking, and other maritime crimes.
Among the key participants is the Regional Security Division of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, led by Colonel Dr. Abdourahmane Dieng. He is representing Ambassador Abdel-Fatau Musah, ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security. Other stakeholders include representatives from maritime security agencies, international organizations, and technical partners committed to strengthening regional maritime governance.
The transfer of YARIS to the Yaoundé Architecture marks a significant milestone in Africa’s efforts to develop a self-sustaining, collaborative approach to maritime security.
Experts will deliberate on strategies to ensure a smooth transition, technical integration, and the long-term sustainability of the system under regional leadership.
As discussions progress, stakeholders are optimistic that this initiative will reinforce Africa’s maritime domain awareness and response capabilities, paving the way for enhanced security in one of the world’s most strategic maritime corridors.
