IGP Reshapes Benue Policing, Creates two New Area Commands, Five Divisions Upgraded to Tackle Security Threats.

In a bold move to tighten internal security and combat rising threats across Benue State, the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Kayode Egbetokun, has approved the creation of two new Area Commands and the elevation of five police stations to full divisional status.
The sweeping reorganisation—part of a broader strategy to tackle policing challenges in Nigeria’s difficult terrains—targets some of the most volatile local government areas in the state. The decision, according to the Force Headquarters, follows a comprehensive security appraisal that revealed urgent operational gaps and an overstretched police presence in rural and restive communities.
The newly established Daudu and Naka Area Commands will take over policing responsibilities in several communities currently grappling with insecurity. Daudu Area Command will oversee Guma, Daudu, Yelwata, and Agan, while Naka Area Command is tasked with coordinating policing efforts in Naka, Apa, Agatu, and Okpokolo.
In a further show of intent, the Force has upgraded five police outposts—Ayilamo, Yelwata, Jato-Aka, Okpokolo, and Agan—into full-fledged Divisional Police Headquarters. This development is expected to enhance law enforcement visibility, reduce response times to distress calls, and reinforce security presence at the grassroots level.
Speaking on the development, IGP Egbetokun charged the Benue State Commissioner of Police and officers designated for deployment to the new formations to “display renewed professionalism and commitment” in ensuring robust security across the newly restructured areas.
“This is a proactive step aimed at bringing policing closer to the people, especially in communities that have long been underserved due to terrain and logistical challenges,” the IGP said.
He further appealed to the Benue State Government and residents to intensify their collaboration with the Police, stressing that “community support remains vital to lasting peace and effective security operations.”
Beyond Benue, the IGP has directed Commissioners of Police in other parts of the country facing similar topographical and insurgency challenges to initiate practical, community-oriented policing solutions. He assured them of full backing and resource support from the Force Headquarters to sustain effective security across Nigeria.
The police reforms come amid rising demands for a more decentralized and responsive security architecture, particularly in regions battling banditry, communal clashes, and other violent crimes.
