ICRC Strengthens Humanitarian Relations As Head of Delegation Visits ECOWAS President in Abuja Nigeria. By Raymond Enoch
In a historic and significant move to deepen humanitarian collaboration in West Africa, Ms Doris El Doueihy, Head of Delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Nigeria, officially presented her letter of accreditation to the President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, H.E. Dr Omar Alieu Touray, on Friday, 12 December 2025, at the ECOWAS headquarters in Abuja.
The presentation marked the formal recognition of Ms El Doueihy as the ICRC’s principal representative in Nigeria, opening avenues for intensified cooperation between ECOWAS and the ICRC across the region.
During their ensuing discussions, Dr Touray underscored existing and potential areas of partnership with the ICRC, aligning with ECOWAS’ strategic objectives to foster peace, stability, and sustainable development in West Africa. He reiterated the Commission’s commitment to strengthening its collaborative efforts with international humanitarian actors to promote shared prosperity and resilience among member states.
The visit signals a renewed commitment to robust ECOWAS-ICRC engagement, ensuring that humanitarian support and regional development efforts are closely coordinated in the face of evolving challenges across West Africa.
