Germany, Togo Reaffirms Renewed Partnership Deal to Deepen Development Cooperation.
By Raymond Enoch
Germany and Togo have reaffirmed their longstanding partnership with a renewed package of development commitments aimed at delivering concrete, people-centred results in the West African country.
At a recent round of high-level bilateral negotiations in Berlin, both delegations held what participants described as a constructive and forward-looking dialogue that underscored the depth and continuity of the friendship between the two nations, as well as their shared values and interests.
According to officials, the talks, highlighted by the German Embassy in Lomé and by Dr. Bärbel Kofler of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), focused on driving sustainable economic and social development while reinforcing democratic principles, inclusion and respect for human rights. The exchanges once again brought to the fore the joint interests that guide the cooperation between Germany and Togo, particularly the commitment to transparent, accountable and inclusive governance.
Under the new commitments, Germany through BMZ agreed fresh support to Togo in key sectors of national development. These include the promotion of agriculture to boost food security, rural livelihoods and climate-resilient production across the country. The negotiations also prioritised the strengthening of local self-government to empower local authorities, improve service delivery and enhance citizen participation in decision-making at the grassroots level.
In addition, Germany pledged increased assistance to Togo’s health sector, with particular emphasis on advancing the rights and wellbeing of women and girls. This support is expected to reinforce national health systems, expand access to essential services and help address persistent gender-based disparities in healthcare.
The programmes will be implemented with the backing of major development partners, including Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, KfW Development Bank and the World Food Programme (WFP). Officials stressed that these institutions will play a critical role in translating the new commitments into tangible projects and measurable impact on the lives of ordinary Togolese.
The bilateral negotiations were conducted in what participants described as a spirit of transparency, mutual respect and genuine partnership, aimed at ensuring that future initiatives continue to benefit the populations of both countries. Both delegations reaffirmed their determination to strengthen existing cooperation frameworks and to align future interventions with Togo’s national development priorities.
During their stay in Berlin, the Togolese delegation also visited the German Federal Council (Bundesrat) to gain deeper insights into Germany’s governance and institutional arrangements. The visit further enriched the political dialogue and provided an opportunity to exchange perspectives on democratic processes, institutional checks and balances and inclusive policymaking.
With this renewed commitment, Germany and Togo expressed confidence that their collaboration will be further deepened, supporting Togo’s development ambitions and consolidating a partnership anchored in shared values, mutual trust and practical results.
