FRSC Gets Tough on Highway Safety: Corps Marshal Orders Immediate Road Signage at All Construction Sites Nationwide.
By Raymond Enoch
The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has issued a firm nationwide directive mandating all construction companies operating on Nigerian roads to immediately provide adequate and clearly visible road signs at every construction site, in a decisive move to protect motorists and other road users.
Building on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s push to transform Nigeria’s road network through extensive construction and rehabilitation works, the Corps Marshal stressed that no project site—whether active or temporarily inactive—will be exempt from strict safety requirements.
He ordered all construction firms to install, maintain, and regularly update proper warning, information, and diversion signs around their project zones, warning that the era of poorly marked or unsigned construction areas is over.
To guarantee full compliance, the Corps Marshal has directed all FRSC Commanding Officers across the country to commence immediate, strict, and sustained enforcement of the directive in all formations. Commands are to step up supervision of project corridors, identify defaulting firms, and enforce applicable sanctions.
Mohammed frowned at the recurring failure by some contractors to provide adequate signage, describing it as a dangerous omission that exposes motorists, commuters, and pedestrians to avoidable crashes and confusion around work zones.
He reiterated that the directive is final, binding, and enforceable, adding that any contractor found violating approved safety standards will face decisive regulatory actions.
The Corps Marshal reaffirmed FRSC’s readiness to collaborate with the Federal Government, contractors, and other stakeholders to ensure that massive investments in road infrastructure translate into safer, more secure journeys for all road users across Nigeria.
