The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has lauded the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, for her unprecedented donation of ₦110 million to victims of a recent tragic road crash involving Kano State athletes. The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, described the support as a timely intervention and a powerful reflection of the Renewed Hope Agenda in action.

According to a press release signed by Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, mni, FISPON, anipr, Corps Public Education Officer, FRSC Headquarters Abuja, the donation is aimed at supporting the families of the 22 young athletes from Kano State who lost their lives in a devastating road crash earlier this year. The Corps Marshal praised the First Lady for her compassion and leadership, describing the donation as a “lifeline” to the bereaved.

“This is not just a donation; it is a clear message from the Presidency that no Nigerian life is too small to protect, nor any family’s pain too insignificant to address,” the Corps Marshal said. “This act aligns perfectly with the fifth pillar of the United Nations Decade of Action on Road Safety, which focuses on post-crash care.”

Shehu Mohammed reaffirmed the Corps’ resolve to reduce road crashes across the country and to ensure that when accidents do occur, victims and their families receive the necessary support. He also emphasized the importance of collaboration between government institutions and the public in sustaining safer roads nationwide.

Meanwhile, in a separate but related development, the Executive Governor of Kano State, His Excellency Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has signed an Executive Order mandating full-scale, aggressive enforcement of all traffic regulations within Kano metropolis. Special emphasis, the Governor stated, will be placed on traffic light compliance, a persistent issue contributing to the alarming rate of crashes in the state.

To implement the Order effectively, the Governor has directed the Federal Road Safety Corps and the Kano Road Traffic Agency (KAROTA) to partner closely and deploy joint enforcement strategies. He further stressed the importance of synergy, enforcement, and public education in saving lives and building a safety-first traffic culture in Kano and beyond.

Reacting to the Executive Order, the Corps Marshal assured the public of FRSC’s full commitment to the directive. He announced plans to deepen collaboration with KAROTA, deploy additional personnel to high-risk routes, and scale up public awareness campaigns in Kano State.

In a stern warning to road users, the Corps Marshal declared that motorists caught violating traffic regulations—particularly running red lights—would face the full weight of the law. “Recklessness on the road will no longer be tolerated,” he said.

The Corps also reiterated its call to corporate organisations, state governments, and the general public to support road safety initiatives. The Corps Marshal emphasized that the task of saving lives on Nigerian roads is a collective responsibility that transcends government institutions alone.

With the First Lady’s humane intervention and the Kano State Government’s decisive enforcement policy, stakeholders say a new chapter is opening in Nigeria’s quest for safer roads and improved post-crash care.
