FARI 2025: Youth Driving Africa’s Future. By Raymond Enoch

The city of Cotonou is alive with energy and ideas this week as the second edition of the African Forum for Research and Innovation (FARI) brings together young minds from across the ECOWAS region. Held from May 5 to 9, 2025, FARI 2025 celebrates youth-led innovation and entrepreneurship under the theme: “African youth, innovation and entrepreneurship: building a sustainable future.”

The event, part of the 50th anniversary celebration of ECOWAS, kicked off on Monday with a powerful message from Professor Fatou SOW SARR, ECOWAS Commissioner for Human Development and Social Affairs. “I am delighted to see that an important subject such as science and innovation, which is crucial to the growth of Africa and our region, is arousing so much enthusiasm at the highest level,” she told a packed audience at the opening ceremony.

FARI 2025 serves as a stage for young entrepreneurs, researchers, and innovators to showcase their work and connect with policymakers, development partners, and industry experts. From cutting-edge agritech solutions to climate-smart technologies, participants are demonstrating that Africa’s youth are not just dreaming of the future—they are building it.

Leaders and innovators from all 15 ECOWAS member states are present, alongside notable figures from Benin’s political and public spheres. The gathering has transformed Cotonou into a temporary capital of creativity and collaboration.

Looking Ahead to the Grand Finale
The five-day forum will culminate in a Heads of State session and a start-up awards ceremony, where promising young enterprises will be recognized for their impact. H.E. Dr Omar Alieu TOURAY, President of the ECOWAS Commission, is expected to attend and present awards to the standout start-ups.

As FARI 2025 continues to unfold, it stands as a compelling reminder of the region’s potential and the power of youth-led innovation to shape a more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable Africa.
