In a renewed effort to strengthen regional peace, security, and development cooperation, the ECOWAS Commission and the European Union have reaffirmed their commitment to enhanced strategic dialogue and collaboration.

Ambassador Abdel-Fatau Musah, ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, received Ambassador Gautier Mignot, Head of the EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, along with Ms. Agnieszka Torres de Oliveira, Political Officer, during a high-level meeting at the ECOWAS Commission Headquarters in Abuja. The discussions focused on reinforcing shared priorities in addressing regional security challenges, governance issues, and development imperatives.

Ambassador Musah welcomed the strengthening of the partnership, emphasizing that the collaboration between ECOWAS and the EU remains essential to building resilient institutions and tackling complex threats in the West African region. “Our dialogue with the European Union is not only strategic but necessary in consolidating peace efforts, democratic governance, and sustainable development across member states,” he stated.

Ambassador Mignot reaffirmed the EU’s unwavering support for ECOWAS-led initiatives, highlighting the importance of trust, shared values, and joint action in addressing regional threats such as violent extremism, political instability, and humanitarian crises.

The meeting underscored the enduring commitment of both institutions to a robust, transparent, and proactive partnership. As regional dynamics continue to evolve, both parties agreed on the need for coordinated responses, enhanced technical support, and mutual accountability to drive regional progress.

Looking ahead, future engagements will focus on strengthening institutional capacities, supporting inclusive governance reforms, and reinforcing early warning systems and conflict prevention mechanisms.

This visit marks another significant milestone in the longstanding EU–ECOWAS relationship, reaffirming a shared vision for a stable, secure, and prosperous West Africa.
