ECOWAS, UK Defence College Deepen Strategic Relations on Peace and Security in West Africa. By Raymond Enoch

In a strategic shift in international diplomacy and strategic cooperation, the ECOWAS Commission welcomed a high-level delegation from the United Kingdom’s Royal College of Defence Studies (RCDS) to Abuja for a critical dialogue on regional peace and security.

The engagement, organized through the ECOWAS Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security (PAPS), served as a cornerstone of the RCDS’s overseas study tour and was aimed at exploring ways to bolster peacebuilding efforts, foster strategic alliances, and revisit operational frameworks for peacekeeping across West Africa.

The 21-man delegation from RCDS was led by Rear Admiral Steve Dainton, while Mr. Bekaye Coulibaly, representing the Directorate of Peacekeeping and Regional Security (DPKRS), coordinated the ECOWAS side on behalf of the Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security.

Key moments included a detailed presentation on ECOWAS’s ongoing mediation and peacekeeping interventions across the subregion, highlighting the institution’s evolving role in addressing complex security challenges.

Rear Admiral Dainton commended ECOWAS for its steadfast commitment to regional stability, emphasizing the importance of multilateral cooperation in an increasingly interconnected global security environment.

This strategic dialogue marks another vital step in ECOWAS’s drive to enhance partnerships and promote sustainable peace through collaborative action with international defense institutions.
